Custom Sterling Silver & Gold-Plated Engagement Rings in Oslo

Your Story Comes First

An engagement ring does not become meaningful because it is expensive.

And a deeply personal ring does not need to be made from gold to carry value.

At Maralkunst, we begin somewhere else.

We begin with you.

Your relationship. Your personality. Your memories. Your vulnerability. Your beliefs. Your symbols. Your intentions. The places you have been together and the experiences that have shaped you.

Then we ask:

How can we give that story a physical form?

Sometimes the answer is an 18K gold ring with a natural diamond.

Sometimes it is 14K gold with a lab-grown stone.

Sometimes it is a handmade 925 sterling silver ring with one small gemstone that carries enormous personal meaning.

All of these can belong to the same Maralkunst world.

Because our focus is not the material first.

Our focus is your story.

A Custom Ring Can Be More Than an Engagement Ring

Our Your Love Story Collection includes engagement and commitment rings, but custom jewelry at Maralkunst is not limited to proposals.

A personal ring can represent love between two people.

But it can also represent transformation.

A new beginning.

Friendship.

Family.

A milestone.

A memory.

Loss.

Strength.

Belonging.

An anniversary.

A promise to yourself.

Or an experience that cannot easily be explained in words.

Some stories are shared between two people.

Others belong completely to one person.

The material can change according to your story, lifestyle and investment.

The intention remains personal.

Why We Offer Sterling Silver for Custom Rings

We believe custom jewelry should not belong only to people with the highest budgets.

Perhaps you have a beautiful idea but solid gold is not where you want to invest right now.

Perhaps you would rather spend more of your budget on a meaningful gemstone or on developing the design.

Perhaps you simply love silver.

925 sterling silver allows us to create a genuinely personalized ring at a more accessible price than solid gold.

Choosing silver does not make the story less important.

It simply gives the story a different material.

A limited budget should not mean:

“Choose something generic.”

It can instead mean:

“Let us find another way to tell your story.”

What Is 925 Sterling Silver?

Pure silver is naturally very soft.

For jewelry, it is normally combined with a small percentage of other metals to make it more practical and durable.

925 sterling silver contains 92.5% silver.

That is what the number 925 represents.

Sterling silver has a naturally beautiful white appearance and has been used in jewelry for generations.

But it has its own character.

It is softer than many common gold alloys and may scratch, bend or change more easily when exposed to pressure.

It can also naturally darken or tarnish over time.

None of this automatically means something is wrong with the ring.

It is part of understanding the material you have chosen.

Is Sterling Silver Suitable for an Engagement Ring?

Yes — for the right person and with the right expectations.

If you want to wear a silver engagement ring every day, we want you to understand that your hands are constantly active.

Your ring comes with you while you open doors, carry shopping bags, exercise, clean, sleep, travel, work and move through everyday life.

Silver can therefore develop scratches and surface changes more quickly than harder materials.

Strong pressure can also affect the shape of a delicate silver band or stone setting.

This does not mean you cannot wear it.

It means:

Wear it. Love it. But understand it.

Caring for fine jewelry is part of owning it.

Why Maralkunst Sometimes Uses Rhodium Plating on Silver

For some of our custom silver rings, we can finish the piece with rhodium plating.

Rhodium is a precious metal belonging to the platinum-group metals.

A very thin layer of rhodium is applied over the sterling silver.

This gives the ring a brighter, cleaner white appearance and creates a protective surface over the silver.

One reason we use rhodium plating is that plain sterling silver naturally reacts with its environment and can gradually become darker.

While the rhodium layer remains intact, it helps the silver stay brighter and can reduce or delay visible tarnishing and darkening.

For a client who loves a crisp, luminous white finish, rhodium-plated sterling silver can be a beautiful choice.

Does Rhodium Plating Stop Silver From Becoming Dark Forever?

No.

We prefer to explain this clearly.

Rhodium plating is a surface finish.

It is not permanent.

Through everyday use, friction, water, hand washing, perspiration, cosmetics, chemicals and individual skin chemistry, the rhodium layer will gradually become thinner.

Eventually the sterling silver beneath may become exposed again and can naturally begin to tarnish.

This does not mean your ring has failed.

It means the surface finish has been worn through use.

The ring can normally be professionally rhodium-plated again when necessary.

Think of replating as maintenance rather than replacing your jewelry.

What Is Gold-Plated Sterling Silver?

Gold-plated sterling silver begins with a 925 sterling silver ring.

A layer of gold is then applied to its surface.

This allows us to create the warm visual feeling of gold while keeping the investment considerably lower than a ring made completely from solid gold.

It can be an excellent choice for someone who loves the appearance of gold but currently prefers the price level of silver.

However, there is one thing we want every client to know before choosing it:

Gold plating will fade with time.

Gold plating is not solid gold.

It is a surface layer.

As you wear the ring, this layer gradually becomes thinner and eventually the silver underneath may begin to show.

That is a natural characteristic of plated jewelry.

How Fast Will Gold Plating Fade?

There is no exact answer.

And this is where we believe honesty is important.

The same plated ring can behave very differently on two different people.

Why?

Because plating is influenced by both your lifestyle and your individual body chemistry.

If you wear the ring every day, frequently wash your hands while wearing it, shower with it, exercise with it, swim with it, sleep with it or expose it regularly to hand sanitizer and creams, the plating will usually fade faster.

Perspiration, natural skin oils and individual body chemistry can also influence the finish.

Someone who removes their ring before water, exercise, cleaning and heavy activities will normally preserve the plating longer than someone who keeps it on continuously.

We would rather tell you this from the beginning.

Then you can decide whether plated silver is the right material for your lifestyle.

Can Gold-Plated and Rhodium-Plated Rings Be Replated?

Yes.

Both gold and rhodium finishes can normally be professionally renewed.

When the plating has faded, the underlying ring may still be perfectly fine.

The surface simply needs refreshing.

At Maralkunst, we consider replating part of the natural maintenance of plated jewelry.

Whenever possible, we can also help guide you regarding appropriate maintenance or replating.

Plain Silver, Rhodium-Plated Silver or Gold-Plated Silver?

There is no universally better choice.

Plain 925 silver gives you the natural character of silver. It can tarnish and develop patina, and it can normally be cleaned and polished again.

Rhodium-plated silver gives you a brighter, whiter appearance and helps reduce visible darkening while the plating remains intact.

Gold-plated silver gives you the warm appearance of gold while keeping the underlying material and overall investment closer to silver.

What matters is knowing what you are choosing.

At Maralkunst, we want to match the finish not only to the design but also to the person who will live with the ring.

Can a Silver Ring Have a Diamond?

Absolutely.

A beautiful gemstone does not need permission from the metal surrounding it.

A custom silver ring can be created with a lab-grown diamond or natural diamond, depending on the design.

We can also work with moissanite and many different colored gemstones.

The more important questions are:

How will the ring be worn?

How large is the gemstone?

How delicate is the setting?

What does the stone mean to you?

What is your investment?

And does the combination make sense structurally for everyday use?

We do not automatically believe an expensive stone must be placed in the most expensive metal.

But we do believe the design should make sense.

What Gemstones Can We Use in a Silver Custom Ring?

There are many possibilities.

Diamonds.

Lab-grown diamonds.

Natural diamonds.

Moissanite.

Sapphire.

Lab-grown sapphire.

Spinel.

Topaz.

Garnet.

Colored gemstones.

Cubic zirconia.

And other natural or laboratory-grown stones depending on the project.

But choosing a gemstone is not only about choosing a beautiful color.

Some gemstones are better suited to everyday rings than others.

Some scratch more easily.

Some are more sensitive to impact.

Some require more protection from the setting.

This is why our job is not simply to say:

“Yes, we can put that stone in a ring.”

Our role is to ask:

“Is this stone right for this person, this design and this way of living?”

Natural, Lab-Grown, Moissanite or Cubic Zirconia?

There is no single answer that fits every client.

A natural diamond may carry significance for someone because of its natural origin.

A lab-grown diamond may allow another client to choose the size, quality or design they want within a different investment.

Moissanite offers significant brilliance and durability at another price level.

Cubic zirconia can be a beautiful and accessible choice when the concept and appearance matter more than the long-term monetary value of the stone.

Colored gemstones can carry entirely different meanings.

Perhaps blue reminds you of the sea where you met.

Perhaps green connects you to a particular landscape.

Perhaps pink simply feels like the person who will wear the ring.

At Maralkunst, we don’t begin with:

“What stone should an engagement ring have?”

We begin with:

“What belongs in yours?”

Is Sterling Silver Good for Someone With Sensitive Skin?

Many people wear sterling silver comfortably.

But it is important to remember that 925 silver is an alloy.

The remaining 7.5% contains other metals.

Because people have different sensitivities and body chemistry, one person’s experience may be different from another’s.

If you already know that your skin reacts to particular metals, tell us before production.

We can then discuss the material specification and possible finishes for your custom piece.

Jewelry should be meaningful, but it should also be comfortable to wear.

If you experience persistent redness, itching or irritation from any piece of jewelry, remove it rather than continuing to wear it.

Why Can Silver Sometimes Leave a Dark Mark?

Silver naturally reacts with substances in its environment.

Perspiration, natural body oils, creams, cosmetics, humidity and chemicals can all influence this reaction.

That is why the same silver ring can behave differently on two people.

One person may see very little change.

Another may experience faster tarnishing.

This variation does not automatically mean the silver is poor quality.

It reflects the interaction between metal, environment and individual body chemistry.

Does Silver Have Health or Healing Benefits?

You may find many claims online about silver, gemstones and their effects on the body.

At Maralkunst, we do not make medical promises about jewelry.

We may explore the cultural, emotional or symbolic meaning of a material or gemstone when that is important to your story.

But we separate symbolism from medicine.

A ring can carry enormous emotional meaning without needing to make a medical claim.

Sterling Silver or Solid Gold — Which Should I Choose?

Instead of asking which material is “better,” ask yourself what matters most.

If your priorities are longevity, lower maintenance and precious-metal value, solid gold may make more sense.

If you want a custom piece at a more accessible investment, sterling silver can open many possibilities.

If you love the warm appearance of gold but solid gold is currently outside your preferred budget, gold-plated sterling silver may be an option.

If you want a brighter white silver ring with better resistance to visible tarnishing while the finish remains intact, rhodium-plated sterling silver may be the right direction.

The right choice depends on your story, your lifestyle, your expectations and your budget.

Can I Have a Custom Engagement Ring on a Limited Budget?

Yes.

We want clients to feel comfortable discussing budget from the beginning.

There is no shame in saying:

“This is what I can invest.”

That actually helps us.

It gives us a framework in which to create.

Perhaps the solid-gold version of your idea would cost much more than you want to spend.

Instead of abandoning the story, we can sometimes reinterpret it in sterling silver.

Perhaps we keep the meaningful shape.

Perhaps we keep the engraving.

Perhaps we keep the important gemstone.

Perhaps we simplify another element.

A thoughtful design is not defined by how much money was spent.

Does Choosing Silver Mean My Ring Is Less Special?

Not to us.

There is material value, and there is personal value.

They are not the same thing.

A piece of jewelry can contain expensive gold and diamonds and have no emotional connection to the wearer.

Another piece may contain a few grams of silver and one small stone—but represent a person, a promise or a memory that can never be replaced.

That is why we do not design around status.

We design around meaning.

Can My Silver Ring Later Be Made in Gold?

In many cases, yes.

And sometimes we love this idea even more than making everything “perfect” from the beginning.

Perhaps your first ring represents where your story began.

Ten years later, the same concept may return in another form.

14K gold.

18K gold.

A different stone.

An anniversary engraving.

Another chapter.

People change.

Relationships grow.

Stories evolve.

Jewelry can evolve with them.

How Do I Care for My Sterling Silver or Plated Ring?

The easiest way to think about jewelry care is this:

Your ring can be part of your life without being part of every activity.

Remove it before weightlifting, heavy exercise, gardening, cleaning, swimming, showering or activities where it may be hit, squeezed or caught.

Be especially mindful of frequent hand washing, sanitizer, creams and chemicals when wearing plated jewelry.

Plain sterling silver can normally be gently cleaned and polished.

Gold-plated and rhodium-plated surfaces should be treated more gently because aggressive polishing can remove the finish.

And there is one rule we particularly want our clients to remember:

If a gemstone starts moving, stop wearing the ring.

A stone may be extremely hard.

The metal holding it can still move.

Catching a loose setting early can prevent losing the gemstone completely.

Does Maralkunst Guarantee Custom Silver Rings?

Our custom rings include a 12-month Maralkunst craftsmanship guarantee covering confirmed manufacturing or craftsmanship defects.

This is different from natural material changes caused by use.

For example, normal silver tarnishing, scratches, gradual loss of gold or rhodium plating, surface wear and damage caused by pressure or accidental impact are not automatically manufacturing defects.

After the guarantee period, we still want you to feel that you can contact us.

Whenever possible, Maralkunst can help guide you regarding assessment, maintenance, replating or repair.

Our commercial guarantee is additional to the consumer rights you have under Norwegian law.

Why Maralkunst?

Because when you come to us for a custom ring, we do not begin with a display case.

We begin with a conversation.

Tell us about the person.

Tell us what you love.

Tell us what you have experienced together.

Tell us about the strange little detail no one else would understand.

Tell us your favorite color.

The landscape you remember.

The symbol you keep returning to.

The part of your story that deserves a physical form.

Then we begin to design.

It may become silver.

It may become gold-plated silver.

It may become rhodium-plated silver.

It may become 10K, 14K or 18K gold.

It may carry a lab-grown diamond, a natural gemstone or one tiny colored stone.

The material is part of the story.

It is not the story itself.

At Maralkunst, our focus is not on proving value through price.

Our focus is creating a piece that feels true to the person who will wear it.

Material gives your story a physical form.

Your story gives the material meaning.
