My journey from being an immigrant in Norway to building Maralkunst was filled with uncertainties, but it also taught me the power of persistence. I didn’t just start a business—I rebuilt my life. In this post, I want to share my story—how I went from surviving to thriving, what I learned along the way, and what advice I have for others who dream of creating something meaningful.

 

1. Surviving – The Early Struggles of Starting Over

When I first arrived in Norway, I was stepping into the unknown. I didn’t speak the language, I didn’t have a support system, and I had no idea how to start over.

• The Challenge: Adapting to a new culture while dealing with financial struggles and isolation.

• The Reality: I wasn’t just an immigrant; I was a mother trying to provide for my daughter while figuring out my own identity in this new world.

For a long time, I was just trying to survive—working odd jobs, feeling like I was invisible, and wondering if I would ever truly belong. But deep down, I knew I had something valuable to offer.

 

2. The Turning Point – Finding My Passion and Purpose

Art and creativity had always been a part of me. But at my lowest, they became more than a passion—they became my way forward.

One day, I decided to take a risk and sell my handmade jewelry at a small market. I had no idea if people would buy, but I had to try.

• I watched people’s reactions to my designs—what they loved, what caught their attention.

• I listened to their stories, realizing that jewelry wasn’t just about beauty; it was about meaning, memories, and emotions.

• I saw an opportunity to turn my passion into something real.

That’s when I realized: I wasn’t just selling jewelry. I was creating pieces that told a story.

 

3. Thriving – Overcoming Challenges and Growing My Business

Building a business from scratch as an immigrant woman was not easy. I faced countless obstacles:

• Financial limitations: With no big savings or investors, every small earning had to be reinvested.

• Cultural barriers: Understanding the Norwegian market and gaining visibility took time.

• Self-doubt: There were moments I questioned everything—whether I was good enough, whether this would ever work.

But I refused to give up. Instead of trying to fit in, I embraced what made me different.

• I focused on storytelling through my designs, making each piece unique and meaningful.

• I networked and collaborated, connecting with local communities and businesses.

• I turned Maralkunst into an experience, not just a store.

With time, I went from selling at markets to running a studio in Oslo, being featured in magazines, and even becoming a tourist attraction. My business grew, but more importantly—I grew.

4. Lessons Learned – How to Build Something from Nothing

If you’re an immigrant, artist, or entrepreneur starting with nothing, here’s what I would tell you:

• Start with what you have. Even if it’s just an idea and a small budget, take the first step.

• Embrace your uniqueness. Your background, experiences, and culture are strengths—not weaknesses.

• Build a community. Find people who believe in you, collaborate, and support each other.

• Keep learning. Whether it’s business strategies, marketing, or customer psychology—knowledge is power.

• Never let fear stop you. The biggest risk is not taking one.

I never imagined that a small creative idea could turn into a business that would touch so many lives. But looking back, every struggle, every challenge, and every step forward shaped me into the entrepreneur I am today.
